Obituary of James Metheny
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
James “Jim” Metheny, 88, passed away on March 29, 2025, exactly as he had wished –
peacefully, at home in Elma.
Jim was born on June 4, 1936, in East Prairie, Missouri, to Aubrey and Myrtle (Presson) Metheny. He grew up in Missouri and later served in the United States Army, spending time in Europe before moving to McCleary with his brothers. Jim was the last surviving sibling among nine brothers and sisters.
A man of many talents, Jim could build or repair just about anything. He was never one to sit still, always working in his yard or on a project around the house. One of his greatest joys was spending time and hunting with his best friend and brother, Orb. Jim retired in 1997 after a long career at Simpson Timber Company, and he spent many of his retirement years keeping busy working on his property.
Although he was quiet and unassuming, Jim had a heart of gold and a wonderful sense of humor. He would help anyone without hesitation and could always be counted on. His family and friends will deeply miss him.
In true Jim fashion, he did not want a service, and his ashes will be placed with Orb at the McCleary Cemetery.
The family extends special thanks to Brad Lott for checking in on Jim during his later years and to his caregiver, Gabby, for the thoughtful care she provided over the last several months.
