Richard Waring Obituary

Richard Douglas Waring, 86, of (Harstine Island) Shelton, Washington, passed away peacefully on April 13, 2026 at his home. He was born in Methuen, Massachusetts on March 13,1940. Preceding him in death was his beloved wife,

Shirley, and his brother, Jack Waring, as well as his parents, Harold and Florence Waring.

Born with a deep love for the outdoors and a steadfast work ethic, Richard lived a full and grounded life surrounded by family, nature, and the simple joys that meant the most to him.

Richard found his greatest happiness in activities that brought him close to the land and water—boating, fishing, hunting, and spending long, contented hours on his tractor. Whether navigating a quiet shoreline or tending to a project outdoors, he carried a calm, capable presence that those who knew him will always remember. He is especially remembered for always being willing to help a friend or anyone on Harstine Island who needed help moving some dirt around.

Richard was a man of faith in Christ, a faith that shaped his life with humility, gratitude, and hope. In his quiet way, he lived out what he believed—with kindness, steadiness, and a trust in God’s promises. That faith gave him great comfort in his later years, especially in his longing to be reunited with his beloved wife, Shirley, who passed on to glory before him. For those who loved him, there is peace in knowing they are now together again.

He is survived by his children John (Joyce) Waring, Dan (Debbie) Oliveira, Louisa (Dan) O’Brien and Rich (Heather) Waring; his grandchildren Mike (Fabrina) Waring, Kate O’Brien-Rowland (Kenny Rowland), Danielle (Andrew) Fitzgerald, Blake (Carrie) Oliveira, Austin (Alison) Oliveira, Elaine Waring, and Aaron Waring; and his

great‑grandchildren Anna Rowland, Elizabeth Waring, Gabriel Waring, Odin Oliveira, and Ares Oliveira. Each of them carries forward pieces of his strength, humor, and love for family.

Richard’s life will be remembered with gratitude for the time he shared, the guidance he offered, and the legacy he leaves in the generations that follow.

“Celebration of Life” service will be held on Saturday, June 27th, 2-4pm at Bridge Community Church on Harstine Island.
