Phyllis...Needless to say we are sorry for your loss. Roy was one of the most interesting people I have ever met. He introduced my cousin Kevin and I to the game of golf in Shelton, and to this day it is a passion of both of ours. Our trips to Art and Ida's were always made "colorful" by your husband. He taught us brilliant variations to the English language and made us feel like we were his own boys whenever we were around him. He obviously brought so much joy to the people he came in contact with over the years. We loved coming out to your place on the lake and just horsing around with you, Roy,and our Grandparents. Will never forget that. God bless you! Steve Johnson

I am one of countless musicians and friends who had the joy of knowing Roy. He was a mentor to me. His faith in God, love of music, and his beautiful trombone playing will live on in my heart.

Roy volunteered in both the Middle School and High School at Shelton to assist Trombone and Low Brass players with technique and tone quality. I was fortunate enough to learn from Roy for over 5 years in this context. My love of the trombone and my commitment to great tone quality were certainly encouraged through my interactions with Roy. His gentle spirit and passion for the instrument came through in his playing. I enjoyed these times and learned so much from Roy. The music community has lost a great player here on earth, but I know that his horn is blowing for the glory of our Savior today. God bless you Roy and thank you for your many years of service. They have paid off.

Fondly remember listening to and playing with Roy in a couple of trombone quartets as well as in the WA State American Legion Band where he was lead trombonist for several years.

I met Roy in 1960 at a band at Lake Washington High School, started by Buddy Weber, a Seattle K I DJ. This was the beginning of many treasured experiences and memories with Roy and his family. The church, his faith, family and music were his passions. Roy was an example to all of us in faith, education and friendships and music. He will be sorely !

Roy was such a positive guy. He was like a second dad to me, playing trombones, traveling, going out for a "bean." Roy, Jay and I shared a few trips together as members of the trombone section, and I know he helped make a way for me to go. In the later years, I met Jay and Roy at the Nashville trombone convention. It seems Roy personally knew every important trombone player everywhere. That was one of his passions I knew about. He helped me get my "new" old bass trombone through a series of trades. He was always a great encourager. We'll miss those golden tones, Roy.

I have very fond memories of "Uncle Roy". I remember when I was a boy Roy taking a group of us kids for a nature hike out on the Burnett Island Lake property, and memories of playing volleyball ball with him and other Deffinbaugh family at Byron and Ev's house at Spencer Lake. In my adult years, from to time to time I would re-connect with Roy, and even went golfing with him a few times at the Cushman golf course. He was a great guy and I always enjoyed running into him. He will be missed!
