Linda and family, I was shocked to read of George's going home to be with our Lord. The notice of his death immediately brought back many memories of our flying days together in the Center O Flying Club and the times we had at some of the annual meetings. And it was during some of our attending of various meetings that we came to know you too, Linda.
George always made himself available for whatever problem or question we needed help with. Always with a smile. I am glad that we will all be with George again one of these days. Just as I am assured that I will be with my family, George is assured that his family will someday be joining him.
I wish I would have been able to attend his Celebration of Life but I was unable to do so. I have added you and your family to my prayer list for peace at this time and in the days to come. Jim Glick

Mr. Darkenwald was my son's professor in a business law class. He was one of "the good ones", honestly caring for his students and delivering a sound and practical training in business law. Even several years after Will's taking his course, Professor Darkenwald assisted him with correcting missing credits on the transcript. I thank Mr. Darkenwald for truely caring about his students.

Dearest Linda and Family:
Our hearts are heavy just finding out that you have lost George to cancer. We have been in Florida with our daughter Christina for almost two weeks now,. So sorry to have missed the memorial for him. We have many fond memories from times with St Raphael Guild gahterings in years past, to seeing him beam with pride at the piano recitals of his grandchildren. Always joyful and upbeat when we would see Linda and George together at an event in Olympia or just bumping into them at a grocery store. We pray for your loving family and the heartache they are feeling at this time. Hope you find comfort in the suport of loving friends who care. Our sincere condolences.

It is hard for me to call Skip (George). I was one of the bratty kids he put up with in the neighborhood. He always took time to talk to all of us. You couldn't of asked for a better God Father. While growing up Pearl (who was my God Mother) and Skip saw to my going to mass and school. I owe them all a great deal. I managed to reconnect with Skip a few years ago when I went to visit my son and found out he lived just down the road from him. My son moved up here to AK. to live and passed a few years ago. I haven't been back to Olympia since then. My heart and soul go out to Linda and children. You are all in my prayers.

I am blessed that George and I shared a love of history, the Constitution and politics...and that he chose to spend last spring in my history class at the Senior Center where I enjoyed his wit and insight and knowledge, and his recommendations for good reads. Fun conversations after class, great smile, inspirational background: all that will be missed, but not forgotten. If I can but make half the impact he did, and do half the things he did, in my life then I'll be a happy camper when it's time to pack up the tent. God bless you, G.O.D., and your wonderful family. Transcription of a Living Recorded Message From George Darkenwald. Recorded on September 11, 2016
“To my immediate family of forty years. To my wife, Saint Linda, wife, mother, grandmother extraordinaire. Amanda, Sean, Ryan, Angeli, Kurt, Tim, Morganne, Jordan, Sydney, Carson, Kylee, Sophia, and Avery. I’m speaking to you from my hospital bed at Virginia Mason. I may not be returning to my physical home, but YOU are my home. What a privilege to have you as my family. My message to you is about the past, the present, and the future. When I was a 4 month old orphan in Fargo, North Dakota, my parents selected me, took me home, and named me after George Oscar Darkenwald, the father of my father. I was affectionately called “Skip from day one. My parents introduced me to a wonderful, wonderful family….the Darkenwalds. Some many years later, on a blind date, your mother and I fell in love. (Yes, that does happen often). Your mother welcomed me into your family, and you became my family. What a wonderful forty years it has been. I have been blessed to be surrounded by a galaxy of other family and friends, as well. God has been very, very good to me. I pray for each of you every day. And I mean each of you; not in a mass or in a group, but one by one. I believe in miracles. I believe in the resurrection of the body and of life everlasting. I recite from memory the Credo, the Our Father, every day. I believe in those words, though I may not always know what those words mean. I don’t really know what eternal life means, but I believe in it. I don’t really understand what life everlasting means, but certainly look forward to sharing with you what I find out. I think it will be very good, and I look forward to sharing life eternal with Mom, my beloved, beloved wife, my dearest friend, the love of my life, my life…..and all of you. I love you all very much, and I am thankful and confident that we will all live together forever. I love you all. G.O.D.
Love,
George

A wonderful tribute to George from Thurston County Bar Association and faculty at South Puget Sound College.
George was a prominent local attorney and a Thurston County Deputy
Prosecutor before he started teaching at the College in 1994. Here he served
as a Paralegal Professor who led the program for 20 years until his
retirement in 2014. This past spring he returned to SPSCC and was assisting
in planning and faculty recruitment for the program.
This morning, SPSCC Trustee and a professional colleague of George's, Leonor
Fuller, shared these thoughts for our community:
"George was one of the most well educated people I've ever met. Every
conversation I've had with him was spoken in at least 2 languages, sometimes
3. His wit, humor, insatiable appetite for knowledge, delight in irony, and
gregarious nature will be missed.
George lived a full life and will be missed by many. I will miss our usual
long visit at the Gala and other college and community events that he
frequented.
May George's large spirit and voluminous mind rest in peace."
George's memorial service will be on Monday, Sept. 26, at 12:00 p.m. at
Saint Michael Parish in Olympia.
With condolences to all of George's friends and family,

My wife, Margaret, and I had the unexpected pleasure of a long visit with Skip during Bonnie's memorial. Afterwards, at lunch and standing around with our glasses of wine, Skip was full of wit, enthusiasm and, as always, eagerness to share learning, which I know was one of his life-long loves. We talked about philosophy and the law, Skip being one of the few lawyers I know who actually loved what he did. I merely "liked" it. Skip's enthusiasm was infectious He could bring to life any topic with anybody.
Knowing this, there were still wonderful things I only learned in Skip's obituary. I had forgotten about his service in Vietnam and career as an Air Force officer. I knew Skip had a deep love for the Catholic faith, in which I was also raised, and I'm sure we touched on theological issues, but I didn't know he could carry around passages in Latin and Greek--the real deal when it comes to scholarship. There are so many more things I would love to have talked about with Skip. He had an inexhaustible reservoir of joy in his family, faith, vocations--in everything. He is an example to me of how to live life as a great adventure, but he had something else, a perfect faith that this is just a prelude.
