I served with Major Ballsmith at Shaw AFB 1971/72. He was a wonderful man, and one heck of a squash player…I never beat him, almost, but not quite. My condolences.

I am struggling to find the right words to express the deep feelings I have for this amazing man. He came into my mom's life, and thus mine, when I needed someone to show me what fatherhood could look like. He was kind, caring, gentle, wise, generous, humorous, witty, and above all...unconditionally loving. My heart melts when I think about not having one more quiet conversation, no more funny stories when his eyes twinkle as he tells it, no more games around the table where he leveled all of us in one fell swoop, and then laughed to the point of wheezing and coughing because he cracked himself up. My girls are only just beginning to realize the role he has had in their life already, and I will miss seeing their life filled with his grace. We will spend the rest of our lives remembering Pop, and I do find peace in knowing he lived life right...his impact will affect us forever. I love you Pop.

Taught me how to become a man and be responsible through my actions and behavior. Instilled the core values and beliefs I hold within me today. He was a man of dignified integrity, bold determination and a true caring heart. It was not until 1996 while he and I were on a walk on he banks of Puget Sound that I realized just how much of a impact he had on my life. I shared this with him while giving him a hug and telling him I loved him. How I wish I could do that again. I love you Dad and thanks for everything. You were and still are the best. Always will be.
