Glenn, wonderful to hear that Herluf gave you advice you still value. I could take that advice myself, but I guess it doesn't have the same impact when you hear it from your father! I think of him every day, he was a wonderful role model. Thank you. Helen

I worked with Herluf at the Courts, and I think so fondly of him often. Every time I see mists hovering over land or water, I think of how he would suddenly look up from the meeting discussion we were having, look out the window at Capitol Lake, and say, "See? See how the nymphs are dancing?" What a lovely image. Once we were parking outside a county courthouse and ended up not very close to the curb. He looked at the car and the curb, and with that small smile he had, said, "It's good enough... for government work." A couple of times he would share his experiences in Denmark during the war, stories that still put me at the edge of my seat and make me marvel at his goodness and courage. Herluf was a gem among us. I'm grateful for his coming into my life, and I'll miss him not a little.

I met Herluf when I was a law clerk at the State Supreme Court in the mid-80s. His court record system was pioneering and so helpful, but what is an indelible memory is his kindness and gentle humor. He shone with goodness. Condolences to his loved ones. He was a wonderful man, and it is a privilege to learn more about his life. -Reiko Callner

Herluf was a wonderful role model for me early in my career. He encouraged me to try new things and not worry too much. His support for me as a new manager have me confidence. I've tried to pass that forward the last 30 years.

I'm sorry my condolences are coming so late, but I hope you still receive this note. I've been out of the country and just got back last week. I am very sorry for your loss. I volunteered with Herluf for years through the Olympia-Kato Sister City Assn. I always enjoyed spending time with him. He was always good tempered and cheered up those around him. He was missed when he stopped being an active participant in the association, and my heart breaks to learn of his death. The world needs more kind men like him in it, not less.
