I was a young girl when I left my home town of South Philly, quit my Adminstrative position at Methodist Hospital, leased my apartment & sold my furniture to join him out west on a commune. 1973..... another life time ago! I know ‘Shan’ has finally found peace in his final journey on earth! I wish his daughter: Willow & his family much love & prayers on their loss. :peace_symbol:

I met Shan in 7th grade, he was a quarterback for EOM and I was a defensive end. I really never met him on the field because I never caught him. After the game my dad was talking to Bill Sr, they had been friends since high school, and he introduced me to Shan. Play CYO and rec league sports against him and it continued thru high school, finally playing together.
In Neumann we had a lot of the same classes. Freshman year we had Fr Louie Frieberg for religion. He was the moderator of the tennis team. He dared Billy and me to come out for the team. We accepted the challenge. Long story short, one day after practice he called us aside and said "we've never cut anyone who came out for tennis, so would you please quit", and so ended any chance we had of playing doubles at Wimbledon.
Over the years I would see Billy, at PSU when he would come to visit and later when he came to Philly. Always a good time except when there was a passing of a friend.
Talking with him, I learned of the stroke he suffered and when I had one in 2016, Billy called and offered me encouragement and anytime I spoke to him after that he would always asking me about my health.
In reading all the things he accomplished in his lifetime, to say he lived a full life would be an understatement. I know he was happy when he found Inday.
I'm proud to say he was my friend. (Also I played tennis with him)

I was introduced to "Brother Billy" via his youngest brother - Patrick.
Patrick served as the "best man" at my wedding back in 2000, but we have known each other since our college days at La Salle back in the mid 1980's.
You could say Patrick and I are "close".
Having traveled with Patrick to Washington for vacations multiple summers in the late 80's early 90's, I got to know Billy and his family quite well. I even made a return trip in the early 2000's with my wife and then 4 year old daughter to stay with the Shanahan Clan at the end of our Seattle trip.
The feeling I got when we visited was always a welcome feeling. A feeling that I was a part of the "Shanahan Clan". I feel blessed that Billy came into my life, and I wish nothing but love to the family. The days of my visits to play pickleball, listen to Billy play guitar, sit by the firepit and stare up at the stars at night may be long gone, but the memories and love created are part of my daily fiber.
Rest In Peace Brother Bill!
Love the Delikat Family

It is very hard to put 61 years into a few paragraphs. I first met Shan our very first day of school, first grade Our Lady of Mt Carmel , September 1957. He was living on the 200 block of Porter and I lived 4 blocks away which is like 2 countries away in South Philly terms but we quickly become close friends primarily because of our common love of sports. At 6 years old he was already an accomplished basketball player, participating in leagues for 9 and 10 year olds at our beloved "Rec". In 1960 we were the 2 youngest players for the first South Philly EOM football team playing with mostly 10 and 11 year olds. He started I got little playing time. In grade school we both played for the CYO team coached by his Dad. He was the star and I was a contributor. While we were always one of the best teams we just couldn't make it all the way and even recently he lamented a missed foul shot against King of Peace. We both were altar boys and served together many times and afterwards talked about how much or how quickly a certain priest drank the wine, or which priest said the fastest mass, and most importantly how much the bride and groom put in the envelope for us altar boys. Throughout high school we remained good friends. Because he was a few months older then me he had his license early he would drive me and some others to school in an old blue Rambler wagon. After that fateful day late in our senior year of high school he was gone and I was with him only once in the next 40 years.
I believe God put us back together early in 2010. Since that day we spoke almost daily and had a handful of times together both in Philly and at his beloved "Schoolhouse" on Harstine Island. We laughed about all the old times and the people from our past and caught up with our lives over those 40 years. We also were able to help each other through some hard times. In those last couple of weeks it was really hard but I think more so for me then him. Not once did I hear him complain about his fate. He was more concerned about those he was leaving behind. I thank God for the opportunity of renewing our friendship and hope some day to be shooting hoops with him (he always won!) Sincere condolences to Inday, Vicki, Forrest, Dylan and Willow.

I knew Shan for a brief period in the early Seventies through childhood friends of his that I met at Penn State. He opened his home to me one night when I needed a place to crash and provided a pancake breakfast the next morning. It's a memory that has stayed with me over all these years. I lost track of him not long after. I was glad to have reconnected with Shan on Facebook these past several years. I followed his posts as he described his journey to finding love with Inday and I was happy for him. I am saddened by his passing and I wish his family peace and comfort as they mourn his loss.

I was a classmate of Billy's at Neumann and even then I recognized something special about him.
There were lots of guys at Neumann then who have done extraordinary things that belie stereotypes of that time.
I was proud to know him and feel honored to be in the same High School class.
God Bless and RIP
