It’s been said that there is no greater sorrow in life than losing someone young. All of my heart and love go out to the members of the Chapel family as they navigate their grief. As all of us grieve, please remember to be kind to yourselves. There are no emotions off limits, grief is full-spectrum that way. The loss of Sierra may trigger laughing about happy times, as well as gut-tearing sorrow, powerful resentment, regret. All of these feelings are part of the human experience and are quite beautiful. She was a complex person, so it seems fitting.
I met Sierra when she couldn’t have been more than 12. I was picking up her younger brother for a playdate with my son. Sierra was excited for both of them and buoyant in her energy. I was struck by her inner light, radiant smile and exuberance.
As years progressed, inexplicably, we formed a friendship. It is rare in life that trusting relationships are formed outside of a few friends or family, and across generations. When it does, I think it is important to acknowledge greater forces may be at hand. She needed people in her life and had a knack for finding those she could trust. I was honored to be one of them. We had some powerful conversations I will never forget.
I don’t know if I’ve ever been more touched as when Susan let me know Sierra wanted to see me last fall while in the ICU at St Peter Hospital. Not having seen her since the transition, I was in awe at how radiant and clear she seemed. No make-up needed, just her hair in a ponytail, her more settled soul was complete and obviously content. Incredibly, I was still learning from her.
Sierra found solace, support and hope in her outdoor experiences, as I have, over my lifetime. We did not discuss our connections to the natural world much. We didn’t need to; it was understood that of all the things in life one can do, being in nature, immersing yourself in the wilderness of our planet, is simply the best. I have overwhelming gratitude for Steven and Susan as they made sure Sierra had as many touches as possible with the divinity of our home that we call Earth. I’ll make a point of remembering her when I’m out there on a snow-covered trail, or swimming in a lake or just smelling flowers in the garden. Actually, I won’t even need to try, it’ll just happen.

Sierra gave amazing hugs - she would squeeze super tight and you could tell that she really cared about you and was happy to see you. Her personality was so big and bright. And she would always get a little quieter and her voice would get softer when she was sharing a genuine moment. Sierra was truly an amazing soul, and will be greatly missed by all who had the chance to know her.

Sierra Dawn, who I knew as Alex, was a wonderful human being. Always inclusive of others and a valued member of our Anake class while they were there. I am so glad to have spent time with them as classmates.

Loved this kiddo -I had them as a student at Avanti, a quick smile and always willing to help. They loved the outdoors, and I will always remember them, as they touched my heart  and opened my eyes to the world around.

I first met Sierra, as Alexander, when she was in kindergarten. As a student she won my heart right away. So filled with energy, wonder and curiosity. Even back then there was a great love, and respect for nature and how it worked. I wish I had the words to express to Steven and Susan how special that year was and what a blessing it was to work with such an amazing little person. Your child blessed this world with her presence, even at 5 years old.
My sincere condolences to your whole family. Sending love and prayers for you all.

We have beautiful memories of Sierra growing up on play dates with our sons. She was always curious, creative, full of energy and life. The kids would make rockets out of spare items or run in our woods. She was a caring soul and always a supportive friend. Her smile is infectious and we admire her respect and love of nature. Our family will try to embrace nature and be good stewards of it's blessings in Sierra's honor!
Love to the Chapel family! Susan, Rich, Dylan and Logan
