Howard, and his wife Pat, created a home where everyone was welcome. To know the Austins was to be embraced as family. Ever the relaxed and comfortable host, Howard never bragged or made much of his own accomplishments—he was curious and complimentary about his guests. Warm and eager to share a story, a joke, a beer or the pleasure of a meal, Howard didn’t judge others by wealth or rank, he simply enjoyed people. Few individuals have the talent for making strangers feel at home and valued, but Howard expressed sincere interest in each person who came through his door. In failing health, he couldn’t be that effusive and gracious man any longer. Howard’s genuine kindness lives on in those who loved him and were precious to him. For such a loving gentle man, it feels too soon to let him go.
