I am saddened by Rick passing away! I am currently working on my PhD degree in Supervision, Counseling, and Education, and was looking him up to get back in contact with him because of my current studies. I regret not reaching out to find him sooner (crying right now). Rick sparked a passion for Anthropology within me when I took his Introduction to Anthropology course at GRCC in 2006, I continued to take as many courses from him that I could, and he is an amazing professor!!! I remember telling him that I wanted to go into the Anthropology field and he told me there were not many jobs options unfortunately. Jokes on him though because I am in the mental health field and every bit of what he taught me is relevant and has been of great benefit to me! I have found myself furthering the Anthropology studies to learn ways to better serve individuals from diverse backgrounds in the counseling setting. I wish he was here to continue offering guidance as I navigate the Anthropology parts of my academic/career/hobby/etc journeys and continue branching out into the world. The memory of him lives on within me, however it does not feel like enough. In addition, I recently found out that I am autistic and looking back I really really appreciate him embracing my quirky and inquisitive nature. It is a rare find as I go through the world and now the world is missing an astounding individual. I hope there is an afterlife so I can see him again.

It's been 10 years now since I sat down in Intro to Anthropology, and unexpectedly laughed outright at your colorful interpretation of the Haida creation story. I was captivated. You were entertaining and challenging and charming and everyday I walked out of that room completely boggled by whatever we discussed and mulling over what the world really was. You spoke with so much confidence and wisdom that you challenged even my preconceived notions about myself. You believed in me in such a way that I started to believe in myself -- maybe my grades weren't something I fraudulently tripped and fell into by accident, maybe I was actually smart, maybe I could do something with this mind and make a difference. I took chances I never would've taken. I didn't know what it meant to be a T.A. but you taught me. I didn't know how to tutor but you helped me learn so that I could also teach. As a mentor and teacher you were ever the gentleman, professional, and friendly, and as a friend over the years since GRCC you were ever the teacher, challenging and spurring me to think more, think further, think more clearly. And now in this climate, meeting with people who are working toward reconciliation in my community, I find I can't keep my mouth shut when something I hear or observe doesn't line up with how you taught me to think.
I am almost paralyzed with regret, wishing I had told you how much you mean to me, what a difference you made. You laughed, I think with approval, when I told you once I was naive enough to still hope to make a difference myself, but wise enough to know I might not see the fruit of that labor in my lifetime. So I'll keep working toward that, because continuing to learn and teach others might be the only way I can say thank you now.

Rick was always sweet to me while we worked at Green River College. I have donated a tree to be planted in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, WA. May the tree and his memory grow strong.

Early one morning in the mid-80s, on a classically cool and foggy Olympia day, Stuart Smith and I stepped off the dock and onto a wooden boat, rocking the boat enough to wake its slumbering inhabitant. He popped out of the boat and I met my instant friend. Those twinkling eyes and his heart-warming smile will be in my heart for the rest of my days. I was so privileged to witness the flowering of his love for Loren and how they grew together, and Rick's immense pride and joy in his wife and son. My lovely people, how my heart aches for you. All my love. Kate Crockett Juliana

I was a student of Rick’s back in ‘95-‘97 as a 16 year old rebellious teenager put into the Running Start program in it’s early days. He was one of the teachers at Green River who “saw” me and helped me rediscover my love of learning. I can still recall sitting in his Anthropology classes, listening to his stories about working with Native tribes, and feeling my heart and mind open to the possibilities.
The books I read in Rick’s classes, the passion, humor and wisdom with which he told his stories, his depth and breadth of knowledge and experience all led me to study Cultural Anthropology in my undergrad.
Rick was a true teacher, a storyteller, an adventurer, a philosopher, an observer of human behavior and human nature - a true Anthropologist in every sense of the word. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity that I had to know and learn from him. I am so sorry for his family’s loss. He will be missed.
