Obituary of Carolyn Joyce Slattery

It is with great sadness we share the passing of Carolyn Joyce Slattery on July 9, 2021. She had a lifelong battle with asthma and stubbornly though she fought - it had the last word. Carolyn loved the arts, was a prolific artist in multiple mediums and had several gallery shows of her work. She was an avid reader and had a keen interest in writing since childhood. She was particularly insightful and wrote beautiful prose. She was passionate about animal welfare, rescuing a number of pets from abuse and neglect. She reminded us as gently as she could to be aware of animal cruelty in our food choices. She had a long career in hospitality and was well known in Twisp, WA where she owned the Sage Cup Café and was Dining Manager at Sun Mountain Lodge. In the course of her career she worked in many restaurants in Kitsap County as well. Carolyn was born in Brawley, CA in 1955 to Timothy and Lucy Slattery. She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1973 and from Olympic College with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She loved children and they unfailingly loved her back. She is survived by her father Timothy Slattery and his wife Adalyn; sister Kathy Lundberg and her husband Jerry; brother Caleb Christerson and his partner Chelle Newell; niece Maureen Lundberg and her partner Derek Riney; nephew CJ Christerson; and grand nephews James and Matthew Riney. She had a singular capacity for forgiveness, kindness, gentleness, patience and compassion. Asthma gave her a front row view of life’s impermanence and as a result she saw materialism as a quaint absurdity. Since the youngest age she’s given away her belongings like a 90 year old grandma. She was an old soul, a dreamer and a student of dreams. She was open to all possibilities. She is very deeply missed.
