Penelope Hanes

Obituary of Penelope Hanes

On January 19th,2022, Penelope Ann Hanes (Penny)84, died in Lacey, Washington. Penny was born on February 26th, 1937, in Meadville, Pa. to Elizabeth and Vincent Hand. Penny lived with her sister, Patricia, and her mother near Wellington, Ohio where Penny went to school. She was gifted with a second family in Covington, Ohio where she had step siblings, Barbara and Bob, and two half-brothers, Patrick and Tony Hand. Penny married in 1955 to Herald (Jake) Smith and had four sons. A second marriage led her to San Diego, California where she and her sons lived for 10 years. Eventually Penny moved to her favorite place on earth, a home she renovated and lived in for over 45 years on the shore of Lake Pattison in Lacey, Washington. Her family surrounded her during her last days and she passed away in her home, which is what she hoped for. Penny retired from her job as a quality control inspector at Boeing at the tender age of 55. She was an avid reader, loved long driving trips well into her 70’s and crocheted beautiful afghans which she gave away to friends and family. Penny was also a dog lover all her life – especially BIG dogs. So much so that she rescued a nearly blind Newfoundland when she was in her 70’s. And she developed a late blooming love for the game of golf. She could never hit the ball far, but it always went straight! Her greatest passion was for her family. She was a Great Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma, as evidenced by the care exhibited by all as she neared the end of her life. She is survived by her sons, Scott (Linda), Ken (Kathy) Mike and Jeff Smith, her brother Tony, 6 loving grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildrenand 2 great-great grandbabies. She will be remembered and missed! In accordance with Penny’s wishes there will not be a funeral.
