Mary Day

Obituary of Mary Edith Day

Mary Edith (Adamson) Day went to be with The Lord on December 28, 2014 surrounded by her family. Mary was born in Cold Spring, NY on January 21, 1958 to Douglas and Edith (Jordan) Adamson where she joined siblings Kathleen, Michael and later Norman. She attended Haldane School from kindergarten to senior year where she graduated in 1976. Mary enjoyed traveling to Canada to visit her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins and riding the street cars in Toronto was one of the memories she told most often from her childhood. She loved spending time at the girl scout camps as a brownie and in later years became a counselor at Camp Hope and Camp Joy for handicap and underprivileged youth where she met James Day. Both Mary and James attended Washington Bible College in Maryland. They married in early 1978 and welcomed their first born Joshua in December. As James was in the Air Force, he got stationed in Montana where they had Sarah in 1981 and moved back to Maryland to welcome Jeremiah in 1983. They settled in Vancouver, WA in 1986 after making a trip out here and falling in love with the Pacific Northwest. Mary enjoyed many trips to Multnomah Falls, the Oregon and Washington Coast and loved traveling back home to New York. She enjoyed being around water whether it was a walk along the Columbia River, feeding ducks at Vancouver Lake, hiking at Multnomah Falls, having a picnic at the ocean or sitting by the Hudson River. The water was calming for her and brought peace into her soul. Mary made friends everywhere she went. Her smile radiated even on the toughest day. Her main job in life was taking care of people whether it was her family, working in the nursing home, running her in-home daycare for 26 years or being a doula for laboring mothers. She loved every aspect of life starting with the birth process. If a number had to be chosen, it would be well over 100 children that went through Mary's doors over the years she provided care, this doesn't include the many children she babysat for growing up back in New York! Parents found comfort and strength with her abilities to work with their children and teach them patience, kindness, love and acceptance for others. She was well known as the "Schwabie daycare" for many years early on, watching kids late in the evening on snow rush days. In more recent years on any given day she was "the sweet lady walking down 9th Ave with a handful of kids in tow!" Caring for her grandchildren on a daily basis brought her an indescribable joy. She would always say "not many people get to be grandma everyday but I do" and she loved every minute of it! Mary has been involved at every church she has attended over the years from teaching classes to children and adults, helping organize potlucks and any other events that were held, she was always ready and willing to be put to work. While many would come to Mary in her time of need to comfort her, they would in turn be inspired and comforted because of the way she lived her life trusting in The Lord for guidance and strength. In this last year, Mary has been faithfully reading Jesus Calling Daily Devotionals. Her devotion for December 27th, the opening sentence read "I am preparing you for what is on the road ahead, just around the bend. Take time to be still in My Presence so that I can strengthen you." and the closing sentence read "Walk in the light with Me, and you will reflect me to the watching world." This was gods ultimate plan for Mary as she slipped away into his arms and never read this devotion on that day. Mary leaves behind her children Josh and Karen Day with Rylan (6) and Easton (3), Sarah and Matt Simonson with Hailey (14) and Christian (11) and Jeremiah and Jenna Day with Lillyana (7), Marcus (4) and Jonathan (1). She also leaves behind her sister Kathleen and Francis Mahodil; nephews Frank and Dawn Mahodil with great nephew JJ, Darren and Andrea Mahodil with great nephew Sean and great niece Alison. Brothers Michael and Melanie Adamson; nephew Tyler and Lexi Adamson, niece Heather Adamson with sweet Bailey pup and Norman and Janet Adamson. Mary is missed greatly by numerous cousins, aunts and uncles in the US, Canada and England, in-laws in Maine and Florida as well as friends that are near and dear to our hearts for the care, love and support they helped provide especially over this last year! She was proceeded in death by her sister Pamela in 1956, her father Douglas in 1998, James in 2000 (1 year after they divorced), her mother Edith in 2010 and a grandson Devin in 2005. A memorial service will be held on January 17, 2015 at First Church of God in Vancouver, WA at 11:00am with refreshments afterwards. A service will also be held in New York later this year.
