Dad, what fun I had talking to you these past years. Every Sunday I’d call you because you because you’d either have really good advice, or lighten up the atmosphere if I was feeling gloomy. We didn’t get to go to the Chowder Pot (I know being the avid hunter and fisherman, you don’t want me talking about the fried seafood platter). I can hear you now-“Jennifer, I thought I told you not to mention that”.
We became good friends again, the way we were when I was young. I remember when I learned read, it was with the Peter and the Wolf storybook and audio cassette. Going to school for teaching, we talked in class about our memories of learning to read, and my memory was of you and that book. I remember the see-saw you made for me from scratch. I also remember all the pets you let Clayton and me bring home (including Baby the dog, who some people were afraid was in the neighborhood, let alone in the house). The garden, the fish from the ocean, and venison from the woods. Fruit trees in the back yard. Sometimes I look back at the way we grew up, and I honestly have to say I couldn’t have done that myself.
I wanted to be like you when I grew up, but they don’t need too many engineers who don’t like math. I decided to go into Special Ed, and went to school right up the road from your apartment building. The tenants all really liked you, and complained about you selling the building when I went back to visit. You did all your own maintenance. I always tried to follow your work ethic in everything I did, even though it was a different career path.
I enjoyed your company and will not find anyone who will take your place. I will always continue to talk to you.
