Hello to the family and friends of this amazing man he helped my daughter, KarLee Swope, graduate. He went above and beyond what any other teacher would ever do and came to our house for a "mock walk" because she couldn't walk with the high school. I know he was the force behind my daughter encouraging her to graduate high school at 21, along with her boyfriend, Daniel Heidi, a couple years before her. I know that he was very much appreciated and loved by all! He will be remembered with much love in my family. Thank you Mr.Taylor......you are gods angel now shining down on all of us that you touched during your brief years here on earth. Lynn Stone

My sincere condolences to the family at this sudden and great loss. As with so many other students, Jim Taylor saw a need with one of my children and found a way to help. He went to great measures to make a difference in a student's life and for that I am sincerely grateful. The testimonies here attest to his amazing accomplishments, true heart and generosity. Our condolences to the Taylor family. He touched my entire family as a teacher and colleague. He was in the room next to my principal's office. One day I had a very irritate parent in the office with his child . At the next break Jim came in and said that I must have laid the wood to the young man as there was quite a commotion.. I told Jim that the young man had received several good whacks.....but I didn't do the swinging. The parent did. Jim got a big kick out of that. The walls were thin so there were no secrets between Jim and I....Rest in Peace...........The Smethers Family

I join North Mason, his friends and family, and the thousands of students who attended his classes in mourning the loss of Jim. He was a good friend. Though it is true that Jim and I collaborated on some celebrated pranks at the Middle School (the Art Guidi’s tie gambit being the coup de grâce), I remember Jim more for his absolute commitment to education. He could have left the profession years ago, but instead chose to continue to guide young minds both educationally and socially.
Jim was one of the most intelligent and talented people I have ever associated with. Whether he was working with adults, Mission Creek Youth Camp, Computer courses, Middle School, High School, or just providing a second chance to those that didn’t think that they would get one, he was the finest there was to offer. Jim could teach anything; a true renaissance educator. It is his highest tribute that he wanted to direct his talents to those who were struggling.
I will always remember his quick wit, his charm, his dedication.
I miss you, Jim. You will always be in my memories.

Mr Taylor was my history teacher in 7th grade. He was my brothers tutor and came to mom's house on his free time to help. He helped a couple other siblings as well.
Then he was my son's best teacher ever!
My son liked to tease that he loved Mr T so much that he might have a man crush hahaaa!
He went beyond teaching. My son jay would bring his guitar or banjo and they would play after his school work was done. My favorite was the dueling banjos lol.
During a conference we got into talking so much that he took up the next kids time by 15 minutes lol !!! One conversation was how he liked south park..the crass cartoon show. I raised my voice in shock "MR. TAYLOR! "
He had to...absolutely had to explain how much it was politically correct. ..I gave it a try and he was right.
Now I'm sad that my youngest son can't have this time to share more memories.
Yet when I found out his legacy lives on and my son is being taught under Mr Ts

So many people loved him. He touched so many hearts.

How can I not say something positive about Mr. Taylor? He was a wonderful guy and always so full of wonderful stories. Me and my wife would sit for hours just listening to him and we would always come out laughing and wishing the day would never end. When our son would be scared that he had so much work to do to graduate Mr. Taylor would always say. One day at a time Jerry and don't look at the big picture. Just compartmentalize everything into bite size quadrants -- so that's what Jer did and in the end he had only a couple credits to finish and had to past that WALSA in writing Mr. Taylor drilled him and told him he had what it takes just be dilligent. Sure enough he graduated by passing the WALSA and by working dilligently to finish those two classes before the end of summer! Sir it has been a pleasure to have known you and this is after all your day so as they say in Spamalat let's look at the brighter side of life! Here's to you and all the countess people from near and far who had the opportunity to have crossed your path!

When I returned to NM to teach, I reintroduced myself to him. His face broke out in a huge smile and welcomed me back to NM. I remember having so much fun in his classes. He has touched so many kids' lives. He truly worked wonders with those students who struggled in a traditional school setting. Thank you for all you did for the NM community. For my first seven years at North Mason (1975-1982), Jim was my neighbor across the hall at the middle school, an English teacher who could discuss almost any topic with eloquence, humor, and deep knowledge. He loved the students and loved teaching. It was such a joy to work with him whether we were creating curriculum, escorting a bus load of 7th graders to a performance of Verdi’s “Aida at the Seattle Opera House, or overseeing a tug of war on the last day of school.
And Jim was a gifted prankster. One morning I had been correcting papers for 15-20 minutes before school started when suddenly my classroom was filled with the strafing of an attack plane. Since I was pretty confident WW3 had not started, I climbed on top of a desk, dragged out boxes from the top of the storage cabinet, and found a tape recorder. Jim had made a tape with 40 minutes of dead air before the attack commenced and sneaked the recorder into my room before I arrived. I don’t remember what prank I pulled as payback, but I’ll never forget Jim’s Lebensfreude, his zest for life.

Mr Taylor once had us all settle down for some music. Instead of a German song like we expected, he put on The Nylons "This Island Earth." He briefly set it up enough so we would listen exactly to the words... It was sobering and memorable. I bought the cassette tape afterwards, even. I think it is very fitting to post the lyrics here. He was concerned about the direction the world was going and felt it important to do his share of increasing awareness. A great man!
THIS ISLAND EARTH
Calling all dreamers and optimistic fools
Don't let go of your dream make it now, make it all come true
If you believe in a brighter day, I know we can find our way
To this island, in a starry ocean
Poetry in motion, this island earth
Spinnin' like a dancer, gravity is the answer
Rendezvous in the blue, this island earth
We don't know what's in store today
We can spread our wings and we can soar away
Or we can go like the dinosaurs, they say
The choice is ours to make
All this seems like yesterday
We can wake up one day and be history
Or stick around to unravel the mystery
Of how we came to be
On this island, in a starry ocean
Poetry in motion, this island earth
A beautiful oasis for all the human races
The only home that we know, this island earth
Well I know we can touch the stars one day
And kick up the dust on Mars one day
Or trip the light of the Milky Way
We've got to find our way
If you're lookin' for a miracle open your eyes
There was one this morning just about sunrise
Dawn came breakin' like a wave on the sea
And it's there for you and me
Calling all dreamers and optimistic fools
Don't let go of your dream make it now, make it all come true
If you believe in a brighter day, I know we can find our way
To this island, in a starry ocean
She's poetry in motion, this island earth
Spinnin' like a dancer, gravity is the answer
Rendezvous in the blue, this island earth
Whoa, this island earth
Got to find our way

My heart smiles as I remember the days spent in Mr. Taylor's German classes. For three years, each and every day he brought energy and integrity to the art of teaching and learning. I remember him playing he guitar and we would sing as we conjugated verbs...he taught us beer songs which we thought was so cool... He trusted a group of teenagers in a fancy restaurant, for some of us this was a brand new experience. He impacted my life and the lives of so many... A deeply respected man who was loved because he respected and loved us! I pray his family finds peace in knowing that lives continue to be changed as I try to instill the same love of learning in the teenagers I teach each and every day... His spirit and enthusiasm has inspired a new generation...danke Herr Taylor du geliebt wirst und deinen Geist lebt weiter !

Although nobody likes to have their family members die, I was lucky enough to get to see him one last time, exchange a few words with him in German, and even get a book recommendation, when I was up in Washington for my grandma and grandpa's funerals.

My last conversation with Jim was reflecting on all the state mandated hoops we have to help kids jump through. The first thing that comes to our minds when we think of Jim Taylor is thank you.
Thank you for getting in contact with Eichendorff School in Kelkheim / Germany .
Thank you for giving our students the possibility to get to know and appreciate North America especially the Pacific North West .
Thank you for establishing the school exchange program between NMHS and Eichendorff School in Kelkheim which helped many young people to get to know each other and to become friends .... Is there anything more positive to say about a teacher and colleague?
And we are all convinced that he was a fantastic teacher and colleague.
Dear Jim, we all thank you and we won't forget you.

He will be remembered. - Phyllis D. (Frank) Slayton

It is fitting the Jim was still teaching when he passed. While he was not on the NMHS when I was there, but he had a wonderful impact on many of our students. Jim was the teacher they could relate to, a teacher they liked, one who was flexible in regards to learning. Jim understood that we all learn in different ways. Jim is a teacher that many students will remember fondly, and the NMSD staff will remember and miss for a long time.

I remember Mr. Taylor as my US history, music, reading, and careers teacher. He made us work hard and want to work hard. He was my original inspiration for becoming a middle school teacher. You will be greatly missed.

Jim and I continued our friendship both in school and in private life, and I remember fondly many long talks about relationships. Jim was so intelligent, so caring and was always exploring new ideas. I was so happy for Jim when he found the "love of his life" and had the joy of ready-made daughters as well. Jim obviously made a lasting print on many peoples' hearts. Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that he is gone. He was a great teacher, and a friend of my grandma's. He was the 4-H camp director at once too.
I still remember some of the German songs that he sang in German class, bringing back German candy from trips to Seattle, and other things that he did for his students.
Although nobody likes to have their family members die, I was lucky enough to get to see him one last time, exchange a few words with him in German, and even get a book recommendation, when I was up in Washington for my grandma and grandpa's funerals.
He was a wonderful person, and will be missed by many, until we get to see him again on the other side of this life.
