Ron L. Thomas
Ron was a master of his craft and I enjoyed working with him at Continental Can Company (now called Crown Cork & Seal. I came to work at Continental Can in 1979 and started in the machine shop as a machinist, where Ron had been employed for some time. At that time there were 19 machinists in the machine shop doing inline repairs and overhauls of the large equipment, some being several stories high. Machinery and parts that would fit through the machine shop sliding doors, were repaired in the shop. If a part could be reconditioned or a new part made, by using the mills, lathes, grinders, etc., Ron and the other machinist would do it. Ron had other skills too. Much of the machining required a great deal of knowledge and high precision, often in the range of fifty millionth of an inch, particularly in the tool and die work. Ron and only four other machinists held a tool and die rate, which is at the top to the machinist trade. Because of Ron’s skills, he often worked on the dies used to make the ends-millions a day- on beverage containers, popularly known as pop cans, where parts not done to specification could fail and run into twenty dollar bills per minute down time back then. If an error went undetected, that cost could easily run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, so getting it right was important. Ron got it right! Ron and I had many enjoyable conservations on repair work, Quilcene, schools and Oly Bears football. Our four girls were in the same schools as Ron and Randy and even had some classes together. Linda and I would sit next to Ron and Jennette at the football games and cheer on the two boys and one of our daughters, Tami, who was co-caption of the Bears dance drill team. Ron often talked of his work as a machinist for Simpson Timber Company, before coming to Continental Can, and how he loved to run those old Axelton lathes there. I will miss him-they just don’t make machinist like Ron anymore.

One of many fond memories with my father was our shared passion for firearms. A mutual interest that sparked hours of conversation and countless father and son outings. His inviting smile and contagious laugh were trademarks that magnetically drew people close to him, young and old, even total strangers. Miss you Dad!

OM Goodness is this ever hard to look at the picture of my precious Uncle. Of my memories go back to the beginning of my life...to many to count, but my favorite memory of uncle Bud is the way he and my Dad would laugh there big hardy laughs when they visited each other. The minute the door opened they would start, and everybody else couldn't help but join in. Our family times in Brinnon at Grandma and Grandpa's were the best times! I will always hold a special place in my heart for my uncle Bud!
