Ed and I were friends in high school. After graduating I went into the Air Force and eventually became a senior wing instructor. While teaching a class of new students one day, we got to talking about our previous civilian lives to get to know each other. Ed and I did not recognize one another. Must have been the short hair. When I said I was from Vancouver and Evergreen High, Ed then realized it was me. We laughed like Hell. Good times remembered. RIP my friend.

Though I hadn't been able to see (Ed) Edwin Hamilton much in the last several years, he was a great friend and an important part of my life when I was young and spent my summers living with my brothers at Pekin Ferry. Ed and I used to stay up to the wee hours of the night talking philosophy, religion, politics, science, anything really. Those years are some of the fondest memories of my life and Ed was a HUGE part of them. I remember how thrilled we were to see each other the last time after a long stretch. I am so glad I got to spend that time with him again. I wish I had called him when I thought about him last week. I will always deeply regret not doing so.
The following poems I wrote a long time ago about other friends that are no longer with me, but with only slight changes I felt they applied to Ed, and I wanted to share them with Ed's friends and family, those I know and those I don't, since I will be unable to attend his memorial this Saturday much to my sorrow.
My condolences, thoughts, love and friendship to Ed's family and friends. I hope I can get to say my own goodbye to him with my family soon. I am weary of mourning alone. I wish someone could have held the darkness at bay for him.
My Friend
My friend,
Was a mountain of faith.
And like a river that flowed from the mountain peak,
He was a continual source of support and encouragement.
And like the mountain,
That marked my return home from a long journey,
Seeing my friend made me feel secure,
And let me know I had my place in this world.
My friend was one of the people in my life,
That made me a lucky man indeed.
My friend was one of the candles in my life,
That Fearlessly held the darkness at bay.
He was a source of meaningful wisdom,
Who freely gave of his experience,
Always lent his ear,
And never turned his back.
My friend was a well of genuine concern,
And always endeavored to bring a smile and a laugh.
My friend,
Was strong of character.
My friend,
Was a mountain of a man.
My friend,
Left a piece of himself forever in my heart,
A piece of my heart,
Will forever be with him.
Ed
A memory of true friendship,
A friends life gone from mine.
The haunting image everyday,
Of such a gift forever gone.
A friend, a life, so grand,
So great a gift from God,
A whisper from the Divine,
That blessed my life just by being.
I knew no life so giving,
As the one that ended so suddenly,
The day our lives darkened,
The day our friend left us all,
Touched by his friendship,
Haunted by his death,
Graced with his memory,
Heart broken by his absence.
I remember the day,
We said goodbye,
To the truest friend we could have wished,
Until the time we meet again.

Ed was a loving brother and friend to so many people. His sisters and family knew that he loved them because he told them every time he talked to them....every time. And he was loved very much by his sisters and family and friends. He is going to be missed terribly by all who knew and loved him. RIP my dear brother, RIP.

My wife and I did not know Ed as long as some have. The time we were blessed to know this Man among men was a time we were truly rich with friendship. Quality is always better then quantity. Men like Ed are few and far between. Rest in peace. Friend
I can remember the exact moment I realized the kind of man Ed was. He took a job down at a RV park. When he arrived they were going through management changes. He was handed a life time of work the moment he showed up. He was prejudged because of prior management. Water lines were freezing heaters were not working. He came down with pneumonia twice. He continued to keep things moving in a forward positive direction in a place that didnt deserve him. After the cold weather started clearing he and I were having a conversation I asked him why did he take this job on let alone stay. He said he couldnt just up and leave the residents of the park to live with the conditions they were in. All the while not being paid an honest pay for what he was asked to do. Ed went over and beyond for everyone. He stayed because he had a heart he.
